Magnet update

I want to welcome everyone back to a fantastic school year.  I am here to provide you with any assistance.   On a monthly basis you will receive information specific to our program in this newsletter. 5th grade families, it is time to start thinking of Magnet Middle Schools.  The Online e-choices application period begins in October.  We look forward to working with you!

Closed Campus

We are continuing our closed campus policy.  Please help us by checking in at the office at all times when coming to school. You will get a visitor’s pass from the office and are required to sign the visitor list, too.  Do not use the parking lot gate or allow your children to use it.  It is extremely dangerous for students to use this gate.  We must make sure that all adults walking the campus have a reason to be here.  All entrances to the school will be locked between the hours of 8:05 a.m. and 2:25 p.m.  The only entrance into the school will be the main gate on Hillrose.  We are doing this to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone here.

Emergency Forms

Please be certain that all information on the emergency form is the most current, especially the telephone numbers.  Please ensure that each of your children have returned the emergency form for this school year.  If you changed your phone number or address, let the office know immediately.  Your phone number is the only connection we have in case of an emergency.  You can help us by having your children memorize their telephone number and address.  You also need to list any person that you think you will ever send to pick up your children in case of an emergency.  We will not release your child to anyone who is not listed on the form.

We will continue to implement our school-wide positive behavior support program.  Sunland students are very well behaved because they know our three rules: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible, and they know what these rules look like in all areas of the school.  Please reinforce these rules at home, and when out in public, by asking your child(ren) what it means to be safe, respectful, and responsible in the different settings.

When picking up your child during school hours, please make sure that you have proper identification.  In order to ensure our students’ safety, we are requiring that every adult have proper identification when picking up a child from school.

We will also post  school information on our website as well as through email, text messages, and social media:  Instagram & Twitter school accounts.

Welcome back to a bright new year. It is wonderful to see new and old faces on the first day of school. Our Parent Center is here to help our parents find resources to help your child through the new school year through workshops and activities. We are always looking for parents that would like to volunteer in the classroom, safety valet, and on field trips. You can apply online at  http//:volunteerapp.lausd.net or stop by the Parent Center for an application.

Is your child in need of a backpack? The Parent Center is happy to provide one for anyone who needs one.

Perfect Attendance

We have 3 different ways to reward perfect attendance.  The first is a classroom reward system.  Every class can earn rewards for the number of days they have every child in attendance.  The class with the most perfect days will earn a special prize at the end of the school year.

The second reward is a monthly award given to every student who attended school every day of the month without being tardy or leaving school early.

The third reward is a trophy given at the end of the year for every student who attended every day of the school year without ever being tardy or leaving school early

Safety Tips

We will need your support by obeying the street signs, pulling up to the curb to drop off your child and ensuring that your child crosses the street at the crosswalk. Your child’s safety is our number one concern.

We will continue the Safety Valet Program.  Volunteers are always needed.  If you are interested, please fill out a volunteer form and return it to the office. Please do not park in the Bus Zone on Hillrose, east of the auditorium.

ELAC and SSC Meeting on

Thursday September 26, 2019

ELAC 8:15 AM  SSC 2:30PM

This year our attendance goal is that 80% of our students will have 96% or better attendance.  That means that 80% of our students will have no more than seven absences for the whole year. We know we can meet it with your help.  Please plan all trips and medical/dental appointments for non-school hours.   If you must make a medical/dental appointment during school hours, ask for a note from your provider so we can mark the absence with a medical excuse. If your child is absent from school for any other reason, please send a signed note explaining the absence or call the office.  The school needs this information for documentation purposes.

Personal Property of Students

We ask that you please check your child’s backpack on a regular basis before he/she comes to school.  The school district does not provide insurance for loss or damage to personal property of students.  We discourage bringing personal property to school, particularly large sums of money, expensive clothing, jewelry, and watches.  Electronic games and other such toys are prohibited, as they can become a distraction during the instructional time.  Cellular phones are permitted as long as students have them turned off and put away during the instructional day.

Counselor's Corner

My name is Linda Good-Hart and I am grateful and happy to start my 4th year at Sunland Elementary.  I am looking forward to providing social, emotional supports to enhance every student’s school experience this year.  I will be providing individual, family and small group counseling (by referral and with parent consent), crisis intervention, collaborating with our teachers and staff to support our students progress, providing parent workshops, conducting weekly evidenced based programs (2nd Step, FOCUS, Growth Mindset, MindUp and Resilency Builder) in our classrooms and organizing school wide campaigns to enhance student engagement.  I am also preparing to welcome 4 Master’s in Social Work Interns from CSULA and CSUNI will formally introduce our MSW Interns in our October newsletter.

As the plant manager, Agustin Hernandez, I want to inform you that every six months, specially trained personnel will visit our school to check the condition of any asbestos-containing building material.  A copy of the inspector’s written report will be included in the school’s Asbestos Management Plan.  Minor asbestos abatement work may be performed due to normal maintenance activities during the coming year.  A specific notice, if such occurs, will precede any large-scale abatement, at that time.  All abatement work will be followed by a report of such activities and will be included in our Asbestos Management Plan, which is available in the main office for review.

After School Playground

All 2nd – 5th grade students are welcome to stay after school for the Youth Services program.  We want to remind you that the Youth Services playground closes promptly at 6:00 PM.  Please make a note of this and pick up you children by 6:00 PM. It is each parent’s responsibility to provide appropriate supervision and transportation home to ensure the safety and well-being of your child. Any student participating in YS needs to submit a permission slip.  Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated.

We will have our first PTA meeting of the year on Friday, September 6 at 8:15 am in the Parent Center.  We really want to establish a strong and committed PTA membership.  All parents and teachers are encouraged to be members and get involved.  This is a wonderful opportunity for parents, community members and teachers to come together in support of our students! The PTA board will be reviewing how our school PTA can support our school  and describe the  leadership roles of the PtA board.
